Lincoln-Way Central’s girls wrestling team members recently shared insights into their strengths, motivations, and goals for the upcoming season during media interviews.
Ella Giertuga emphasized her adaptability as her greatest strength. “It’s important to understand your wrestling,” she said. “If someone relies on strength, they’ll probably get tired later. Adjusting to that is a big part of wrestling.” Giertuga also expressed her appreciation for the team dynamic, saying, “I love knowing I can rely on teammates during a dual or after a tournament.”
According to Liv Clumpner, her offensive skills provide her with flexibility. “I can shoot both sides,” she said. “A left or right fireman. But it depends on who you’re wrestling.” Clumpner finds motivation in the rigorous nature of the sport, stating, “I like sticking to something and trying your best. And my teammates and coaches mean a lot to me.”
Sadie Sparks described her wrestling style succinctly: “Just wrestle tough.” Sparks’ motivation originated from being told she couldn’t wrestle. “My dad said I’d get beat up by boys,” she said. “So I tried it—and I stayed.”
Riley Depolo highlighted her escape ability as a key strength. “I’m good on bottom and good with time,” she said. Depolo aims to reach state while continuing to learn “the flow of wrestling” and pushing her limits.
All four wrestlers indicated that their postseason goals are centered around improvement, maintaining composure, and making significant progress in Champaign.
