The Lincoln-Way Central girls’ water polo team secured a significant victory against Lincoln-Way West, winning 9-5 in the sectional championship on May 17. This triumph marked their first sectional title since 2019.

According to Coach Pam Shaughnessy, the Knights overcame a three-goal halftime deficit by scoring seven goals in the second half. Leading the offensive charge was Angelina Platos with four goals, supported by Molly Olson with two goals, and contributions from Genevieve Dal Ponte, Sophia Gaier, and Emily Ewanic. Goalie Claire Cann’s nine crucial saves were instrumental in securing the win.

The victory improved Lincoln-Way Central’s season record to 25-6 and qualified them for the state tournament. The Knights are set to compete at Stevenson High School on May 22 at 8:15 p.m.

In addition to their athletic success, several seniors celebrated both their sectional championship win and graduation on the same day — clinching the title by 9 a.m. and graduating just two hours later at 11 a.m.

“It was a perfect day for the program,” Shaughnessy said, expressing pride in the team’s resilience and achievement.
