For the Lincoln-Way Central competitive dance team, motivation is rooted in their camaraderie.
Senior Juliana Kahl expresses that her drive stems from her fellow athletes. “I do what I do for them,” Kahl said. “I want us to always feel proud of each other.”
According to teammate Maggie Lundy, accountability and collective improvement are key motivators for the team. “What motivates me to try my best is knowing that I’m helping my teammates and everyone around me,” Lundy said.
Several members of the Knights have found that dance provides them with friendships, confidence, and a sense of purpose. Senior Selah Maranto, who started dancing during her freshman year, noted a shift in her priorities as she advanced in the sport. “I realized how much of a team sport it is,” Maranto explained. “I want to make my teammates proud, and most importantly, my coach proud.”
Meredith Gardiner, a longtime dancer, mentioned that dance has been integral to her life since childhood. “I’ve loved it every single year,” she commented. “A big part of it is building relationships and surrounding myself with the best people I can.”
As the Knights prepare for their upcoming season, athletes emphasize that a strong mentality could be crucial. Kahl remarked on this aspect by saying, “My biggest goal is confidence. Being mentally strong can make all the difference.”
