Lincoln-Way Central High School’s boys wrestling team has embarked on the new season with high expectations, following a strong 17-8 record last year under the guidance of Coach Tyrone Byrd.
The Knights have built a tradition of success, achieving a 104-41 record over Byrd’s seven seasons and a 990-474 overall record in the program’s 69-year history.
According to Byrd, returning key wrestlers provide leadership and depth for the season. Seniors Jalen Byrd, Robert Beckham Cundiff, Austin Dmytriw, Michael Heimberg, Aiden Hennings, Ryne Nape, Connor Richardson, Caleb Sturm, Logan Wooten, Dylan Wrobel, and Salvador Zaragoza are expected to anchor the lineup across multiple weight classes.
These veterans bring experience from past dual meets and tournaments and are poised to lead the team both on and off the mat. Freshman Jadon Zimmer is noted as a highly ranked newcomer in Illinois who adds further excitement and talent to the roster.
Byrd says that under his leadership, Lincoln-Way Central has maintained a competitive edge in Class 3A and Class 2A competitions. The team aims to continue its tradition of producing state qualifiers and regional champions each season by combining technical skill, strength, and mental toughness to pursue deep postseason runs.
