The Lincoln-Way Central boys’ water polo team concluded its 2025 season with a balanced record of 14-14 under the guidance of head coach Gary Young. The season was marked by both potential and inconsistency.
“It went well overall,” Young said. “But we were a little too inconsistent with our play. We had too many highs and lows throughout the season.” Despite these fluctuations, the Knights managed to find success through their speed and offensive capabilities.
According to Young, “We were able to keep up in the water with our speed and we were able to score.” However, defensive shortcomings proved detrimental at crucial moments, an area he identifies as a key focus for improvement in the upcoming year.
“We need to improve on defense and blocking more shots,” Young said. Leadership from players such as Kegan Koester and Jack Mroz provided stability during challenging periods, while communication and team culture remained largely positive throughout the season.
“I had to reel them in a couple of times, but the young men, for the most part, were focused and communicated well,” Young remarked. Looking forward, he is aiming for greater achievements.
“I want to be running for the conference championship and be in the sectional championship next year,” Young expressed. Regarding program needs, he hopes to add an assistant coach if budget constraints allow.
“We have to see where the funds are at to see if that can happen,” he said. With returning talent and renewed focus, the Knights aim to build on their .500 season and make significant progress in 2026.
