Lincoln-Way Central boys basketball head coach Brian Flaherty expressed optimism about the future of the program, attributing last season’s performance as a solid foundation for growth.
The Knights concluded their season with a 22-10 record, narrowly missing the school record since the campus was divided into two high schools. According to Flaherty, Central was competitive near the top of their conference but faced challenges overcoming Homewood-Flossmoor, a dominant force in the league.
“We were competitive toward the top of the league,” Flaherty said. “Obviously we couldn’t get over the hump with HF, but everybody else we were able to take care of business with, at least splitting once.”
Flaherty stated the early holiday stretch with multiple tournaments can be an obstacle, but nothing too big for his team to handle.
“We should be able to be up for all that and bring the same focus every time we compete.”
The team will benefit from experienced senior leaders returning this year. Alex, noted as the only returning starter among present players, will join teammates who have gained experience in supporting roles and have also been key contributors to the football program.
“They’re not going to see anything in basketball they didn’t see in front of crowds during football,” Flaherty commented.
Flaherty also reflected on changes in basketball strategy, highlighting today’s faster pace and increased focus on ball screens and offensive creativity.
