On a cold, misty evening on May 21 at the Lockport Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Sectional, Lincoln-Way Central’s boys track and field team delivered a strong postseason performance with a fourth-place finish out of 18 teams and 19 sectional medals.
According to head coach Dustin Waddell, the Knights were highlighted by their 3200-meter relay squad—comprising Bryce Counihan, Jack Galminas, Kyle Friedl, and Brandon Hoff—which claimed All-Sectional honors for the third consecutive year and qualified for state with a season-best time of 7:51.
Friedl also secured his place at Eastern Illinois University in the 800 meters with a third-place finish. Hoff and Galminas delivered a thrilling one-two photo finish in the 1600 meters, both crossing the line in 4:22.
Other medalists included the sixth-place 4×400 relay team of Counihan, Friedl, Alec Demma, and Jace Crowhurst, as well as the fifth-place 4×200 squad consisting of Charles Rogde, Michael Pekovitch, Will Luoma, and Austin Costello.
Individual medal winners were Jackson Mango (fifth in pole vault), Cian Scanlon (fifth in the 3200 meters), Counihan (fifth in the 800 meters), and Crowhurst (sixth in the 400 meters).
Lincoln-Way Central now turns its focus to the IHSA State Championships at Eastern Illinois University, where multiple Knights will compete in individual and relay events.
