Lincoln-Way Central’s boys’ water polo team faced a challenging opponent on Thursday, ultimately losing 14-10 to Waubonsie Valley in a nonconference match.
According to the team’s head coach, Gary Young, freshman Souya Kubota and senior Ethan Pajula each scored three goals, achieving hat tricks that led the Knights’ offense. The game was tied at 10-10 entering the fourth quarter, but Waubonsie Valley, ranked among the state’s top 20 teams, managed to pull away late to secure the victory.
“It was a great game versus a top team,” said Young. “We fell a little short, but I’m proud of how we competed.”
Following the match, Lincoln-Way Central spent time with the Hererra family, who made a donation to the program in memory of their late son, Edwin Hererra. Young expressed gratitude for their support: “We really appreciated their time and support,” he said. “Edwin was a great kid and is truly missed by all of us.”
The Knights now shift their focus to the upcoming Conant Tournament. With strong performances from emerging players like Kubota and veteran leadership from Pajula, they aim to make a significant impact in the tournament this weekend.
