Lincoln-Way Central girls’ cross country team is aiming for a top-10 finish at the state meet this fall, following their qualification as a full team in 2024.
According to head coach Ryan Stapinski, last year’s performance built momentum despite facing challenges. “We made it as a whole team to the state finals, which is a big accomplishment,” Stapinski said. “We dealt with injuries but overcame that adversity and still made it to state.” He pointed to the team’s success during the track season as a catalyst for their current ambitions. “After an incredible track season, the girls are ready to go down and make some noise at the state meet,” he added.
Senior leaders Macy Gallagher, Aubrey Shipman, and Ava Dughetti have been instrumental in setting the tone through consistent summer training and strong time trials. Stapinski noted, “Girls are running 40 seconds faster than last year.”
With a robust group of upperclassmen and depth across the lineup, the Knights believe they are well-positioned to compete for conference and regional titles as well. Stapinski expressed optimism about their prospects: “We’re definitely in a spot to win conference for the first time in decades.” The Knights begin their season with confidence and expectations of challenging the state’s best.
