Central bowler Jon Messlein reflected on his role during last season and outlined his goals for the current bowling season. Messlein discussed his development and expectations during the team’s media day at Lincoln-Way Central High School.
“Overall, watching the team on varsity — because I was on JV most of the year — seeing the varsity guys go out there, have a good time, cheer each other on like a true team. That was pretty nice to see, and now here we are in their place,” said Messlein. “I just like bowling. It’s something different compared to a lot of my sports. It’s more of an accuracy game than anything else. Trying to read the oil patterns is about the same as a putting green. It can be tricky at times, but it can be really easy. I’d like to make it down to state first, and then we can move on to winning.”
According to Messlein, he spent most of last season competing at the junior varsity (JV) level while observing the varsity lineup’s team chemistry and support. He said watching the varsity bowlers cheer for one another helped set the standard for the program’s culture.
Messlein is motivated by bowling because it emphasizes accuracy and differs from his other sports. He compared reading oil patterns in bowling to reading a putting green in golf.
