Lincoln-Way Central softball head coach Jeff Tarala enters the new season embracing both the challenges and opportunities that come with a younger roster.
Although the Knights graduated several key contributors — including a standout player now competing at the collegiate level — Tarala believes the program still has a strong foundation of experience and potential.
“We’ve graduated a lot of girls, so it’ll be interesting to see which players step up and rise to the occasion,” Tarala said.
Rather than viewing the departures as a setback, Tarala sees the season as a chance to reshape the team’s identity and discover new ways to win games.
“We’re going to have to figure out different ways to win,” he said. “We’ll have to be better on the bases, in the batter’s box and in the field. It’s going to take everyone.”
Tarala said he enjoys working with younger athletes, who often bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
“The younger girls really want to impress,” he said. “They listen and try to incorporate what you’re teaching, and that makes it fun.”
Known for his lighthearted personality, Tarala also uses humor to keep the atmosphere positive, though he admitted his sarcasm can sometimes be misunderstood.
“I like to joke around with the girls,” he said. “Sometimes they don’t realize I’m being sarcastic.”
With a mix of youth and returning experience, Tarala hopes the Knights will grow together throughout the season and develop into a competitive team by year’s end.
