Lincoln-Way Central girls basketball earned a 47-43 victory over Thornton Fractional South in a tightly contested nonconference matchup, securing a hard-fought road win against one of the area’s top teams.
The game was played Feb. 17 at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, where the Knights faced a Red Wolves squad that entered the contest with an impressive 28-3 record.
Lincoln-Way Central relied on defensive discipline and steady execution throughout the night, limiting scoring runs and keeping the pace controlled against a high-powered opponent averaging nearly 60 points per game. The Knights responded to momentum swings with timely stops and patient offensive possessions, particularly during the second half. Strong ball movement and composure late helped Lincoln-Way Central maintain separation as Thornton Fractional South worked to rally in the closing minutes. The Knights’ ability to manage possessions and finish defensive sequences proved critical in securing the four-point victory.
Senior Olivia Gehrke, along with fellow seniors Aubrey Birmingham, Brooke Katzmann and Scarlett Abramowicz, helped guide the Knights with veteran leadership, while juniors Katie Barrett, Christina Galka, Molly Ryan and Nicole Demma contributed key minutes throughout the contest.
The win highlighted Lincoln-Way Central’s resilience on the road and added another competitive performance against a strong opponent as the Knights continued their late-season schedule.
