The 2025 Lincoln-Way Central girls’ water polo team achieved a historic season under the guidance of head coach Pam Shaughnessy. The varsity team concluded their impressive 26-7 season by securing several titles, including undefeated Southwest Suburban Conference champions and sectional champions, while also receiving the conference’s Sportsmanship Award.

According to Shaughnessy, “This season could not have gone better for the program.” She emphasized the importance of humility and gratitude, saying, “We’re most proud of the amazing human beings the girls are. We’ve stressed the importance of humility, gratitude, and being good people — and they’ve fully embraced that.”

The team’s success was attributed to their confidence, positivity, and strong camaraderie. Shaughnessy noted, “These girls are fun to watch. Their chemistry and energy, both in practice and in games, gave them an edge,” adding that they believed in each other.

While celebrating their competitive achievements, Shaughnessy highlighted the need to encourage new athletes to join earlier in their high school careers. She said, “We see incredible development over four years, but we’d love to see that confidence build sooner.”

The Knights were led by seven seniors: Claire Cann, Marissa Culver, Emily Ewanic, Sophia Gaier, Jaylyn Kucera, Tessa Nakos, and Molly Olson. Their leadership was instrumental throughout the season.

Several athletes received individual honors: Claire Cann, Molly Olson, Sophia Gaier (All-Conference); Angelina Platos (First Team All-Sectional); Genevieve Dal Ponte (First Team All-Sectional); Jaylyn Kucera (Second Team All-Sectional); Molly Olson (All-Sectional Honorable Mention); Angelina Platos (First Team All-State); Sophia Gaier (Third Team All-State) and SWSC Athlete of the Year.

Shaughnessy remarked on the diverse leadership within the team: “All of the girls are leaders in their own way,” she said. The unique team culture has been praised by opponents and admired throughout the conference.

“They call themselves a family,” Shaughnessy said. Many team members have known each other since childhood and support one another through various aspects of life.

Looking ahead to a rebuilding year after graduating their senior class, Shaughnessy remains optimistic about next season. “We’ll have a young team next season with sophomores and juniors stepping into bigger roles,” she said.

Lincoln-Way Central is well-equipped with facilities but seeks to expand support for feeder programs and coaching assistance. Shaughnessy concluded by expressing a desire for passionate individuals to help build future athletes.
