Lincoln-Way Central’s Jalen Byrd captured a sectional championship, finishing first in his bracket to headline a strong postseason showing for the Knights.
The IHSA Sectional was held Feb. 14 at 9 a.m., with wrestlers competing in postseason action for the opportunity to advance to the IHSA State Finals in Champaign.
Byrd delivered a dominant performance throughout the day, putting together an impressive run through the bracket. He opened with a fall in 4:19, setting the tone early and establishing control from the start. In the quarterfinals, he followed with another pin in 2:54, advancing with momentum and confidence. Byrd continued that pace in the semifinals, securing his place in the championship match with a fall at the 3:37 mark. In the 1st-place match, Byrd sealed the sectional crown with a commanding 11–1 major decision over Lockport’s C. Miller, closing out the day with authority.
The sectional title reflects months of preparation, conditioning and focus, as Byrd has steadily built toward this moment throughout the season.
With the championship finish, Byrd advances to the IHSA State Finals scheduled for Feb. 19–21 at the State Farm Center in Champaign, where he will compete against the top wrestlers in Illinois.
