Lincoln-Way Central junior Jalen Byrd has put together a dominant start to the season, piling up pins, technical falls and tournament titles across multiple weight classes while establishing himself as one of the Knights’ most consistent point scorers.
The season has featured action from late November through mid-January at duals and tournaments across the state, including the Addison Trail Invite, Neuqua Valley Scramble, Dvorak Invitational, North Montgomery Holiday Tournament and the Glenbard West Chris Chappell Invite.
Byrd opened the year with a series of falls at 190 and 215 pounds before settling in at 175, where he has produced an overwhelming number of bonus-point wins. He captured the Addison Trail Invite title with back-to-back pins in the semifinals and finals, followed by a runner-up finish at the Neuqua Valley Scramble. At the Dvorak Invitational, one of the toughest tournaments in the Midwest, Byrd recorded multiple technical falls and pins against state-ranked competition. He continued his tear at the North Montgomery Holiday Tournament with four falls and followed that with another dominant showing at the Chris Chappell Invite, where he added a technical fall and a pin.
Throughout the season, Byrd has consistently ended matches early, racking up falls in under a minute on several occasions while also showing the ability to control opponents with technical falls when needed.
Up next, Byrd and the Knights will compete at the Southwest Suburban Conference Tournament on Jan. 24, with wrestling scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
